Are You Ready for a New Year?

Posted on December 14, 2015 01:40 pm

I am sitting at my desk this mid-December, embracing the holiday season and the impending new year, a time of infinite possibilities. I am feeling pretty good about the year that is almost at its end. I started 2015 with some big goals but was kind enough to myself to allow lots of time to accomplish what I wanted, so it is okay that I am not yet done. I still have big dreams…places to get to in my life and a need to achieve so much more. And with a new twelve months ahead of me, it all still seems within my grasp.

Was your 2015 all you hoped for, less than you expected, or did you simply drift along? If you got all you wanted, then I urge you to dream bigger. And if this year wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, well… no point in moping. If you didn’t have any meaningful goals, was that the best you could do? Don’t you deserve more? Don’t you want more? The good news is this is the perfect time to focus on what is possible now.

“The optimist stays up until midnight to see the New Year in. The pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.”  ~Bill Vaughn

So exactly how does one start to make a new year work? Well, first you need a game plan. If we allow ourselves to become spectators, to simply take things as they come, life will simply happen to us. So instead, how about some tips to get you jump-started on a spectacular, empowering, and breathtakingly beautiful 2016.

“Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.”  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

 • There are no limitations The only thing stopping you from achieving what you want is you. If you can’t do something you must, and if you must do something you can.

• Be willing to change If you continue to show up in the way you always have, nothing will ever change, and you will get exactly what you have always gotten. Is that good enough?

• There is a gift in every negative We only really learn from what doesn’t go right in our lives. In every problem we face, in every negative that happens to us, there is a gift. If you dig deep enough, you will find it.

• Be curious It is important to learn something new every day. If you ask really good questions, you will get really good answers.

• Raise the bar If you desire what you’ve always desired, you will stay in exactly the same place in your life. Expect more of yourself…much, much more.

• Change the behavior If you change the way you show up, you will get different results. Pretty simple.

• No point in focusing on your fears Have fears? Heck, we all have them. The way I see it, being afraid means we are going outside of our comfort zones—a good thing. Instead focus on where you are going. And change your perspective. It will serve you well.

• Think big! Know what your big goals are…those life-changing goals that will get you to that bigger, empowering place; goals that will enable you to change your world or the outside world and how you fit into it. Go for it!!!

• Take action Use the SMART goal model to get what you want in life:

SPECIFIC- Know what it is you want to accomplish

MEASURABLE-Figure out how you can measure your progress

ACHIEVABLE-Make sure your goal is attainable

RELEVANT- Be sure the goal is important enough for you to make it a priority

TIME SPECIFIC- Give your goal a deadline. Otherwise it will be just another dream.

“Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.”  ~Opray Winfrey
