CONSCIOUS CHOICE…IT’S UP TO YOU

Posted on March 1, 2016 10:12 am

My morning routine look something like this: At about 5:50 a.m. my dog, Cookie, steps onto my chest, stares into my face, then licks me vigorously until I get up. I check my e-mail on my iPad then stumble into the bathroom to refresh myself and style my out-of-control curly hair. It’s then to the kitchen to brew a pot of coffee and prepare Cookie’s breakfast (a three-course affair) and give her medication. I sit down to enjoy a mug of coffee and read The New York Times for about 45 minutes, then get dressed, put on make up, make the bed, brush Cookie, and sometimes get a wash going. It’s then back more

Criticism…Can You Take It?

Posted on January 30, 2016 11:55 am

Not always to be honest. I’m a tad sensitive to criticism, as it can put me on the defensive. I think it is partly due to the fact that I am always striving to do things exceptionally well, so getting criticized means that I have not measured up to my own expectations or to the expectations of others. But I am also aware that who is doing the criticizing plays a role in how I react. I am not keen on family members criticizing me, as there is the emotional element attached to that. If friends or business acquaintances are critical of me, the initial sting is still there, but I then push myself to react differently. I want to see if there is any merit to the criticism so that I can benefit from it or use it to repair or improve a situation or relationship. more

Are You Ready for a New Year?

Posted on December 14, 2015 01:40 pm

I am sitting at my desk this mid-December, embracing the holiday season and the impending new year, a time of infinite possibilities. I am feeling pretty good about the year that is almost at its end. I started 2015 with some big goals but was kind enough to myself to allow lots of time to accomplish what I wanted, so it is okay that I am not yet done. I still have big dreams…places to get to in my life and a need to achieve so much more. And with a new twelve months ahead of me, it all still seems within my grasp. Was your 2015 all you hoped for, less than you expected, or did you simply drift along? more

Self-Limiting Beliefs…Give ‘em the Boot!

Posted on April 10, 2014 03:42 pm

• I’ll never make enough money • I’ll never find my soul mate • I’ll never lose the weight Any of these sound familiar? They are known as self-limiting beliefs, and many of us have at least one of them. They may be delivered as facts but are anything but. They are instead beliefs, opinions, or assumptions we have about ourselves that seem unshakable and the absolute truth. But they are only true because we have decided they are and believe that nothing can shake them. The bad news is that these beliefs declare that nothing will ever change, or we don’t deserve anything better. Recall the term self-fulfilling prophesy? If you believe that something will never happen, well you can be sure it won’t. You are setting yourself up for failure and when it comes, maybe it will even feel good in some strange way, knowing that you were right about nothing changing. The big problem with self-limiting beliefs is that they can greatly limit your ability to achieve your goals and attain success, as they pretty much strip us of the power to change what is. more

Patience...A Superior Life Tool

Posted on February 18, 2014 06:44 pm

Today is Friday, the day I spend with my elderly mom. I leave home at 10:45, head over to the garage to pick up the car, and drive the 45 minutes or so to Brooklyn to the European Hair Center, where mom is getting her full head of brilliant white hair coiffed and her slender nails painted bright red. There she is, carefully dressed all in gray with a lime green, magenta, and navy silk scarf peaking out from the top of her gray tweed swing coat. She is looking elegant as she walks unsteadily over to the car. I help her in and off we go to Del Rio’s, the local diner. “How do I look?” she asks. “You look great. I love your hair. Who styled it?” I say. And so it goes until we get to the diner, where we are seated at a generously sized booth at the window. I know what she wants to eat. It has been the same for the last 4 months or so. “My mom will have a waffle with bacon. And decaf coffee with half-and-half, but she wants her coffee when the waffle comes, not before.” more

Positive Thinking...It Works!

Posted on March 11, 2013 01:40 pm

I won’t kid you. I love when things are going swimmingly in my life. It puts me in a great mood, it gives me lots of energy, and I feel as if I can accomplish anything…anything at all. But when something negative occurs, I sometimes react physically and then emotionally. My stomach begins to feel jumpy and my self-confidence goes down the drain. I then seem to lose all of my enthusiasm for the day along with my focus. What has happened is that negative thinking has determined how I show up and live my life. I have fallen overboard without a life jacket. Sound familiar? What I have described is allowing negative thinking taking over. Yes, you heard me right—allowed it to take over and without a fight. The good news, however, is that I don’t have to let that happen. Keep reading… more

Is Your Glass Half Empty or Half Full? The Art of Being Positive

Posted on July 28, 2012 01:01 am

I used to wallow in what wasn’t going right, why I deserved my life with all its imperfections, and why I wasn’t achieving what I wanted to when I wanted to. Once I got going with my negative thoughts, a good bout of crying till my eyes were bright red and my nose swollen, ensured me that what I was thinking was so and allowed me to really get deep into pitying my state. The problem, I slowly came to realize, more
