My morning routine look something like this: At about 5:50 a.m. my dog, Cookie, steps onto my chest, stares into my face, then licks me vigorously until I get up. I check my e-mail on my iPad then stumble into the bathroom to refresh myself and style my out-of-control curly hair. It’s then to the kitchen to brew a pot of coffee and prepare Cookie’s breakfast (a three-course affair) and give her medication. I sit down to enjoy a mug of coffee and read The New York Times for about 45 minutes, then get dressed, put on make up, make the bed, brush Cookie, and sometimes get a wash going. It’s then back to the kitchen to wipe down the counters and clean the sink (my husband washes the dishes but can’t seem to remember the counters and sink). I am now ready to begin my day.
“It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” ~Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
As I read this, my morning routine seems really jam-packed but, it really works well for me because by the time I sit down at my desk, I feel like my life is in order and I can get on with the rest of my day. This morning schedule, where I get so much done, also puts me in the right frame of mind. It is filled with a bit of this and a bit of that but it surprisingly embraces some of my core values: taking care of others, taking care of myself, being organized, being responsible. It is how I choose to show up each day—and it puts me in a good mood…big bonus.
“You are your choices.” ~Seneca
What is Conscious Choice?
Conscious choice is when you choose something (it could be really small or really big or somewhere in between) aware of the result, effect, or consequence of the choice. Every day of our lives, we make all kinds of choices. We choose to get up and go to work, we choose to not to have an argument with a spouse, we choose to ignore someone’s rudeness in the subway or on the street, we choose what to eat. Many of the choices we make are a result of old patterns of behavior, or are a reaction to something, or are triggered by something we aren’t even consciously aware of.
Why is Conscious Choice Important?
When we are aware that we have choice, we understand the power we hold in our hands to shape our lives and to determine who we are choosing to be and who we are choosing to become. That is empowerment!
“In the long run, we shape our lives, and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt
What is the Big Take Away?
• You are in control of your choices.
• The choices you make shape your life.
• You can change your path at any time by making different choices.
• It is important to make choices based on what is truly important—your core values.
• When you consciously choose to present for the decisions you make, you make better decisions.
